1. Geek Love by Katherine Dunn

“This is the shocking story of the Binewski family and their circus. Olympia, who is an albino dwarf with a hunchback, narrates her family history in all its gritty, gruesome glory. The Binewski children were purposefully bred by their parents with the help of drugs and radiation, to have deformities so they could earn a living just by being themselves.  As the children gain in popularity, you start to see that the spectators and ‘norms’ are more freakish than the sideshow attractions themselves. It is at times sweet and yet horrific, funny and yet heartbreaking. Though, fundamentally, this book is about love and the extremes to which love will take us. This macabre tale left me questioning what normal really is, and I loved every page, twice.” — Rebecca

I think Tom Waits’s song “Eyeball Kid” was inspired by this book. Its a great book, set mostly in Portland, OR.
